The money for my school dinners went on the PlayStation. PS: When I was saving for a PlayStation, specifically to play Doom, I didn’t have lunch for three months. Sadly this never gets used for the re-releases. This was fixed for the 32-bit console releases with a spine-chilling soundtrack properly recorded in a studio, featuring demonic babies on vocals. The only thing that lets it down is the dodgy MIDI soundtrack, that I think even sounded terrible 20 years ago. When I hear a camel on a TV travel show, I immediately think there’s a pinky about. And I especially love the sound effects, the shrill whining noise of the doors opening and closing still sends a little shiver down my spine. I love that I can play the whole game in co-op. I love the weapons, especially Doom II’s super shotgun. I love that I have to kill everything that moves. I love the simple premise, the monsters of Hell invading a military base on Mars (presumably they’re from Martian Hell). I downloaded Duke Nukem 3D when it was re-released on Xbox Live Arcade but it just wasn’t very good anymore, despite me briefly thinking that it was better than Doom when it originally came out. It dawned on me that it’s been 20 years since it was released! I really think that Doom is one of the truly timeless classics, along with the likes of Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., and Tetris. When I was saving my progress I noticed the year in the date, 2013.
